It depends on what the feet need.

A nail salon is fine for healthy feet that just want to look nice. A podiatrist is who you see when something needs a doctor.

Golden Years sits between the two. Debbie is a licensed nurse. She has nursed for more than 20 years, ten of them in wound care. At every visit she looks at the skin, the circulation, how much you can feel, and the nails, and she tells you if something needs a doctor's eye.

It is not a spa pedicure. The point is comfortable, healthy feet rather than pretty ones. A visit can include:

• Thick toenails trimmed and thinned safely
• Sore calluses and rough skin eased down
• A check of circulation, feeling, skin and nails
• Gentle care if you have diabetes, arthritis, neuropathy, poor eyesight or trouble getting about
• Plain advice on looking after your feet, and when to call a doctor

She tells you, kindly and plainly. If she sees signs of infection, poor circulation, a wound, a pressure sore, or anything else that needs a doctor, she says so and helps you work out who to call. Usually that is your own doctor or a podiatrist.

The aim is to keep you comfortable and on your feet, at home or in your senior living community.

Usually not. Original Medicare does not pay for routine foot care, such as nail trimming and callus care, unless a doctor writes down a medical reason for it.

That is why the price here is flat and you pay it yourself: $65 for the first visit, then $50 or $65. No paperwork and no surprises.

Some Medicare Advantage plans may pay part of it back. Debbie gives you a receipt to send them.

Most seniors do best with professional trimming every 4 to 6 weeks. Nails thicken and grow more slowly with age, and regular maintenance prevents painful ingrown nails, fungal buildup, and walking discomfort before they start. More about toenail trimming for seniors.

Yes. Diabetic foot care is one of Debbie's specialties as a licensed nurse: careful attention to skin integrity, circulation, and infection prevention at every visit, with sterilized instruments and gentle technique. Every new client starts with the Initial Foot Care Assessment ($65, home or facility): a full look at nails, skin, and circulation, followed by the first complete treatment, trimming, filing, callus care, and a relaxing foot massage to finish.

Golden Years serves more than 30 communities across the greater Denver metro and northern Front Range, including Longmont, Boulder, Erie, Broomfield, Westminster, Thornton, Arvada, Aurora, and Denver, in private homes, assisted living, and senior communities. Payment is due on the day of the visit. Debbie takes cash, check, Zelle, or card online through Square. If a family member is paying for a parent's care, please make sure it's taken care of on the day of the appointment. The payment page works from anywhere.
